Index of death announcements 1958-2004 compiled by Doug Taylor, St Stephen, NB
Index for Obituaries and/or Death Notices published the Saint Croix Courier newspaper between 1958-2004. This index lists the names of the deceased along with the corresponding newspaper(s), listed as volume and issue numbers.
In 2024, the original scans were indexed into spreadsheets and are now offered to our members as part of the search by name database. Click on a year to view the original file. *There is no file for 1989.
Background:
Doug Taylor started this project in 2004, starting with the year 1958, which is a conclusion of the end date of a previous Index of Death Announcements (1880-1957).
The original expectation was that Mr. Taylor's index would be transcribed into a computer format for quick referencing. This would also allow for printing and producing in a binder format, similar to the presentation of the previous Index project. However, when the index collection was turned over to the New Brunswick Genealogical Society (Charlotte Branch), it was determined to be too great work and it was felt that, for at least the interim, the original index notes would be digitally scanned. This would preserve the notes for possible future transcriptions and provide at least some reference access to researchers. Mr. Taylor utilized the microfilm at the St. Croix Public Library in St. Stephen for this project.
Notes During Digitization:
For many years, a variety of paper stock/size was used which made digital scanning and formatting somewhat difficult. As a result, index may not be in chronological order as well issues with contrast/brightness of scan.
- 1958 - index of this year was completed on a mix of various size paper and the resulting digital scans are poorly formatted.
- 1989 - currently, an index does not exist for this year.
- 2000-2004 - "maiden name" index was not digitally scanned due to size limitations.
