Research
The NBGS, Inc. does not conduct research. However, there are some members who offer research for a fee and some for free. Please see the list of NB Researchers for further details.
Genealogists interested in New Brunswick families and communities are advised to examine the New Brunswick Sites listed on our Links page. These sites offer various surname and regional data and sources, either from official records or as collected by other researchers.
It is strongly recommended that New Brunswick researchers visit the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick - Archives provinciale du Nouveau-Brunswick website at http://archives.gnb.ca (Ce site est aussi disponible en français). The PANB site contains a number of on-line documents including: Birth, Marriage, and Death Record Indices and a small number of Passenger Lists (very few lists survive for the 1800-1850 period). Most provincial records are oriented by county. Researchers are therefore advised to download and review the County Guides (Guides de comtés) that have been compiled by the Archives staff. These guides highlight the various resources available for each county and list them by type, description, and accession and/or microfilm number. The County Guides are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to be viewed. A link to download the free Acrobat Reader is provided on the PANB website.

1911 Census Transcription Project
As a continuation of his highly successful 1901 Census Transcription Project, Southeastern Branch - NBGS member Lindsay Patten has updated his website to include new transcription facilities for the recently released 1911 Canadian Census.
The 1911 Canadian Census transcription page may be accessed at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/
Presently, (3 Sep 2005) the site is still undergoing development. However, all areas are now available and the transcription facilties are fully functional. Transcribed pages can be browsed, currently search facilities are only available at the enumeration district level. Further information may be obtained from the 1911 Message Boards
Please note that Lindsay's website, www.automatedgenealogy.com, has a number of other ongoing projects that may be of interest.
1901 Census Transcription Project
Transcription of the 1901 Canadian Census index is now complete with over 5.6 million lines transcribed. The index has links to the images of the original census forms, over 60,000 links to related records, and is completely free to browse or search.
The index project was developed by Southeastern Branch - NBGS member Lindsay Patten. Thanks to his hard work and initiative, as well as the efforts of hundreds of volunteer transcribers, genealogists the world over now have an invaluable reference tool for searching the 1901 Canadian Census. Lindsay's website is located at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com and the 1901 Canadian Census index is located at http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/index.html.
